A major trade event this May will bring fireplace and stove professionals together to discuss how the industry can respond to growing environmental campaigns and proposed health warnings for stoves.
As we reported in January, the government is considering new legislation that would require health warnings to be displayed on newly sold stoves due to concerns about air pollution.
A consultation on the proposal suggested warning labels could state:
“Please be aware that this appliance emits air pollution into and around your home which can harm your health.”
In response, the Stove Industry Association has said that any regulatory changes must be “proportionate, evidence-based and, most importantly, achieve the intended outcomes.”
A rallying call for the stove and fireplace industry
Professionals across the sector are now encouraging the industry to come together and highlight the environmental improvements made in modern stove design.
David Soot, founder of chimney sweep firm Mr Soot, said: “It’s time to flip the script. It’s time to engage real professionals who know how to command attention, how to be proactive, and how to create a narrative based on our own positive stories – and how to fight back strategically and tactically.”
The discussion comes after regulations were tightened in December 2025, giving local authorities in England greater powers to restrict the use of wood-burning stoves in certain areas.
Consumers are also being encouraged to choose fuel with the ‘Ready to Burn’ logo, which indicates wood with less than 20% moisture and compliance with Defra regulations.
Meanwhile, modern stove designs continue to focus on reducing emissions and improving efficiency, following the introduction of Ecodesign legislation in 2022.
